Abel Grimmer Antwerp circa 1570 - 1618/9

This painting, and all of Grimmer's church interiors, are characterised by an advanced understanding of perspective.  This, togehter with the use of a golden light that seems to pre-empt the work of Pieter Saenredam, render his architectural paintings particularly successful; compare, for example, with his slightly earlier work of 1606, that was with Richard Green, London, in 1985 (for which see R. de Bertier de Sauvigny, Jacob et Abel Grimmer, Belgium 1991, cat. no. L, reproduced fig. 110).
