Catalogue Note

On Tuesday August 3rd, 1926, the five big class yachts, Britannia, Westward, Lulworth, White Heather II and Shamrock, were on the Royal Yacht Squadron start line ready for what was to be, a very fast race.  The breeze was from the south providing ideal reaching conditions both ways around the Royal Yacht Squadron Regatta course.

Westward always excelled in such conditions and was soon leaving the cutters astern passing through their lee and reached the Solent Bank buoy well ahead of the lead cutter, Lulworth.  These positions, with Lulworth leading White Heather II, Britannia and Shamrock remained throughout the race.  The average speeds were in excess of ten knots with Westward averaging over eleven.  All the cutters were very closely matched but T.B.Davis's schooner set the pace and after 1hour 45mins of thrilling racing she charged over the RYS finishing line to take 1st prize.
