Catalogue Note

The iconography of this small, portable, Northern Renaissance object is unusual, though not unprecedented, as it shows scenes of the Passion surrounded by the Annunciation and the Assumption.  It is dateable to circa 1530-40 and, as a triptych, its intact condition is rare. Throughout the object are gold inscriptions in Dutch (or a combination of Dutch/German) corresponding to the images, which further supports that it is an authentic intact piece. Although their precise meaning is not fully deciphered, the inscriptions identify the patron of the work- Suster Magdalena van Holsyt genemt (called) van Oest, about whom nothing is yet known.
