Catalogue Note

The image of the three musicians is taken directly from a woodblock by Jost Ammans ('Ständebuch', Frankfurt am Main 1568).

Whilst generally these rare humpen date from the late 16th and early 17th centuries, the relatively late date for the present lot and its style would suggest that the painter was working from this earlier period. There are several similar examples in the literature, dated 1602 (Corning Museum of Glass), 1621 (Coburg) and 1623 (Cluny Museum) which bear strong similarities.
See also A.von Saldern, German Enameled Glass, pp.122-123 for a further discussion on the subject of musicians on humpen.
