Catalogue Note

The present sale includes portraits by Sully of Matilda's grandfather, Henry Kuhl (lot 201) and her father, Thomas Dillard (lot 203). Offered with the present lot is a note card dated May 2, 1972 written by John R. Dillard, the sitter's nephew. In it he reminisces about times spent with "Aunt Tillie" in the 1920s when she was in her 80s.
