Engraving with hand-coloring, c. 1731-76, the fourth (final) state, engraved by John Carwitham (possibly after a design by William Burgis), published by Bowles & Carver, London, after 1764, with 3/4 - 1 1/2 inch margins, on wove paper with the J. Whatman 1794 watermark, in good condition except the margins with repaired tears and surface soiling, framed

Catalogue Note

Although this rare and early New York engraving was not published until after 1746, the view itself dates to between 1731-76, just following the eastward extension of Trinity Church (at the far left) but prior to the burning of the church situated within Fort George (right of center).  In this later state, the engraved lines of the Union Jack flag flying above the fort have been colored over with the Stars and Stripes.
