Philips Wouwerman Haarlem 1619 - 1668

We are grateful to Dr. Frederic Duparc for confirming the attribution to Wouwerman following first hand inspection, and for suggesting that this is an early work by the artist. This painting probably dates from the first half of the 1640s, after Wouwerman had settled in Haarlem and before the change of his monogram to its later form around 1646. As with all of his battle scenes, the action depicted does not portray a specific engagement.
