Catalogue Note
1937 marked the last year the 'J'-class yachts raced in the America's Cup. This work shows Ranger captained by Harold S. "Mike" Vanderbilt defending the cup against Endeavour and Rainbow. The final result was a conclusive 4-0 to Ranger, a revolutionary yacht in that her sails were made of synthetic material and put through trials in a wind tunnel while the mast, boom and spinnaker were made of aluminium. Vanderbilt's wife Gertrude, the first woman to race in the America's Cup, was a member of the victorious crew.
