Catalogue Note

A very similar but slightly smaller floral wreath by Jan Brueghel the Younger, encircling a roemer partly filled with white wine on a stone ledge (oil on panel, 51.5 by 39 cm.), in Gray, Musée Baron Martin, on deposit from the Louvre, is dated by Klaus Ertz to the 1630s (see K. Ertz, Jan Breughel the Younger (1601-1678). The Paintings with Oeuvre Catalogue, Freren 1984, p. 462, no. 295a, reproduced p. 463).  The two floral compositions differ in details, but the salient blooms are identically sited.  Other floral wreaths by Jan Brueghel the Younger encircling religious subjects by Frans Francken the Younger on gold backgrounds are also dated by Ertz to the 1630s, but those in this and the Gray picture are more finely worked than the others, suggesting that they may perhaps date from early in the decade.
