Catalogue Note

Blue diamonds are among the rarest and most sought after gemstones. Whereas other rare coloured diamonds, notably those in hues of pink and red are found in India, Brazil, Tanzania and Australia, blue diamonds are found primarily in only one mine, the Premier Mine in South Africa. Two of the most extraordinary and rarest blue diamonds now belong to the Smithsonian Institute in Washington DC: the Hope Diamond, weighing 44.52 carats, unarguably the most fabled example, which was donated by the renowned New York jeweller Harry Winston; and the Unzue Heart, sometimes referred to as the EugĂ©nie Blue, weighing 30.82 carats, of sapphire blue colour, which was donated by the American socialite and philanthropist Marjorie Merriweather Post.

This diamond numbers amongst the largest blue diamonds ever to be offered at auction.
