8vo (7 1/2 x 4 3/4 in.; 191 x 120 mm).  Nine engraved plates, including the frontispiece, engraved text illustrations (that on p. 329 printed correctly, as in the Norman copy); very faint dampstaining at bottom of half-title, scattered faint foxing, "3324" written in black ink at top of title-page.  Vellum; stained.

Catalogue Note

First issue of the first edition.  This book helped pave the way for the investigations of Laplace and Lagrange.  With it, Voltaire "committed himself entirely to the propagation of Newtonianism" (Norman).
