Catalogue Note

first edition of the poem, signed by both artist and author, this copy being no. 25 of 199 offered for sale. Max Ernst created this whimsical yet powerful visual response to La ballade du soldat  at the age of 81. The artist had been interred in two concentration camps during World War II, and his opinion of war was succinctly expressed by the horse's hindquarters printed on the wrappers.
