The sitter was the daughter of Sir John Rivers, Bt., of Chafford, Kent by his wife, Dorothy Potter. She married Mathew Honeywood of Mark’s Tey, Essex. A portrait of the sitter’s husband was painted by the same hand, and is now in a private collection.
