Catalogue Note

The most illustrious Order of St Patrick was founded on 5th February 1783 by George III.  Membership was limited to the King and Queen, the Lord Lieutenant (Viceroy) of Ireland and twenty-two knights.  The order is now extinct, the last two knights being the Duke of Windsor and the Duke of Gloucester.  Thomas Brady, the cutler of a number of these swords, died in 1783.
