The sitter was the daughter of James II and Mary of Modena. She was
born in exile at St Germaine-en-Laye where she lived with her mother and brother. She died of smallpox aged 20. The present portrait was painted in 1700 at St Germain-en-Laye, where the exiled Court had been established by James II. There is a comparable engraving of her, in reverse, aged nine, in a very similar pose.
