'We are fortunate to have had the opportunity to live with our collection for the last 25 years. Not only did it make our home a haven of warmth and comfort, but it gave our children, who grew up with it, an appreciation of beauty and skilled craftmanship in many forms. But you never actually "own" artwork. You are the appreciative guardian of it for a period of time and that time eventually comes to an end.' – Neil & Gina Smith, New York, May 2019
Sotheby’s are delighted to offer a lovingly curated group of English Silver and Furniture from the Neil & Gina Smith Collection.
The silver displays superb variety, from pieces for the table, to objects for the most discerning of collectors. Highlights include a magnificent pair of champagne buckets once belonging to the eminent Harriot, Duchess of St Albans, a fine George II shaving jug and soap box, with the arms of Lionel Tollemache, 4th Earl of Dysart, and numerous other pieces with Royal and Noble provenance. Many of the great silversmiths are represented in the collection including: Paul de Lamerie, Frederick Kandler, Robert Garrard, and over ten lots marked for Paul Storr.
Similarly, the English furniture epitomises the best of 18th and 19thcentury craftsmanship. Carving and colour are core tenets of Smith collection, with a superb pair of library armchairs in the manner of Thomas Chippendale amongst the highlights.
