This spring’s sale of Old Master Paintings is comprised of an exceptional array of works from schools throughout Europe that span the 13th to the 19th centuries. The opening section of the sale features seventeen Italian paintings from a distinguished private collection that span 500 years of art history, including a 13th-century goldground by the Master of the Magdalen, an impressive tondo by Mariotto Albertinelli, and an elegant canvas by Giovanni Battista Tiepolo. The group of paintings (Lots 1-17) are offered without reserve.
Other highlights include a beautiful collaboration on copper by Jan Brueghel the Elder and Hendrick van Balen depicting The triumph of Love as well asa rare and large-scale portrait by Jean-François Bony that captures his skill as a painter and textile designer as well as his interest in floral arranging. The sale also features a rediscovered, early panel by Sebastiaen Vrancx and an intriguing landscape by John Constable painted after a composition by Jacob van Ruisdael. Also on offer are a strong group of Dutch and Flemish works including landscapes, interior scenes, and still lifes as well as captivating portraits by French and British artists such as Nicolas de Largillierre, Jean-Baptiste Greuze, Joseph Wright of Derby, Thomas Gainsborough, and Angelika Kauffmann, R.A.
