Jamie Ritchie, Worldwide Head of Sotheby’s Wine, commented: “Following a record-breaking 2018, we are delighted to open our 2019 auctions in New York with an incredible selection of Burgundy and more from the very impressive cellar of Marcus D. Hiles. This is the largest scale cellar we have ever visited, and we are privileged that Marcus has again entrusted us to offer this superb selection to our international audience. We are also delighted to be offering them in two special single-owner formats, presenting the wines in a live auction on March 9th and the Macallan in Lalique, Pappy Van Winkle and Madeira in an online sale, which closes on March 12th.” MARCUS D. THE LIVE AUCTION
The dedicated offering this March is anchored by a compelling selection of Burgundy, topped by over 250 lots of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti that are together estimated to achieve in excess of $3 million. Much of the DRC is in original wooden cases, with many previously banded prior to inspection for the sale.
Alongside DRC, the live auction highlights include a trove of the most highly coveted wines from Burgundy’s top estates, with a focus on Rousseau, Roumier, J.F. Mugnier, Leroy, Dujac, and J.F. Coche-Dury. Additional Burgundy domaines featured in the sale include: Mugneret-Gibourg, Liger-Belair, Méo-Camuzet, Emmanuel Rouget, Marquis d’Angerville, Joseph Drouhin, Fourrier, Ramonet, Raveneau, Dauvissat and Roulot.
Le Pin, Petrus, Ausone, and Angélus lead the selection from Bordeaux, comprising the most desireable recent vintages, while California blue-chips round out the live sale, featuring nearly a decade of pristine Screaming Eagle entirely in their original wooden cases.
Coinciding with the live auction, the online-only sale will highlight superlative spirits and ancient Madeiras from Hiles’ magnificent cellar.
The offering of nearly 30 lots is lead by six exclusive The Macallan in Lalique ‘Six Pillars’ Collection decanters, each encasing some of the rarest single malts available on the market today. Each limited-edition decanter will be offered in its original presentation case accompanied by respective crystal stopper.
The reference-point Pappy Van Winkle also figures prominently, including the Family Reserve 15, 20, and 23 Years Old. In addition, some of the world’s rarest Madeiras from the greatest shippers and partidistas round out the online sale, including the legendary Borges “HMB” Terrantez, mythical 1720 HM Borges Pather, and 1794 Adegas do Torreão Verdelho.
