Sotheby’s September Prints & Multiples auction comprises some of the most important and sought-after works produced by Old Master, Modern and Contemporary artists over the past 500 years. Highlights of the Old Master section of the sale include Rembrandt’s scarce subjects The Entombment and Panorama near Bloemendael('The Goldweigher's Field'). The Modern Masters Edvard Munch, Henri Matisse, Joan Miró and Pablo Picasso are represented by some of their most desirable graphic works; the latter by ingenious lithographic and relief cut portrayals of his beloved partners, Françoise Gilot and Jacqueline Roque. The auction culminates with Contemporary editions, including several examples of Andy Warhol’s prints after Munch, a radical printmaking predecessor who inspired the Pop icon. A rare proof of Warhol’s Eva Mudocci(After Munch) pays tribute to Munch and his famed muse, while showcasing the American artist’s own virtuosity as a printmaker.
