The Impressionist & Modern Art Evening Sale presents a selection of works by the greatest artists of the 19th and 20th centuries. Leading the sale is Picasso’s stunning portrait of his celebrated muse Marie-Thérèse Walter. Painted in 1937, it belongs to a prolific period of the artist’s career in which his relationship with Marie-Thérèse was complicated by his falling in love with Dora Maar, providing the impetus for a stream of portraits of both of his lovers.
Elegant and enigmatic, Alberto Giacometti’s Lustre avec femme, homme et oiseau is a remarkable arrangement of the key figures most central to his work – the standing woman and the walking man, set upon an impressive quadruple-branched chandelier. Conceived circa 1949, it dates from a key period in which Giacometti created some of his most revered sculptures.
