Spanning movements from Impressionism to German Expressionism and Surrealism, remarkable paintings, works on paper and sculpture by the leading names of the late 19th and 20th centuries feature in this sale. Leading the auction is Joan Miró’s Femme et oiseaux from 1940, belonging to his fabled Constellations series. An exquisite work of exceptional poignancy and rarity, it is the first Constellation to appear at auction for over fifteen years. Among other highlights are two remarkable early paintings by Wassily Kandinsky: the stunning Murnau –Landschaft mit grünem Haus from 1909 and a pivotal 1913 Bild mit weissen Linien, beautifully demonstrating the artist’s path to abstraction. The sale will also include Giacometti’s pivotal unique bronze Grande figure from 1947.
