Auction Details: The Impressionist & Modern Art Day Sale on November 15th, 2017 in New York comprises an unusually compelling selection of sculptures, works on paper, and paintings. Sotheby’s is honored to offer works from the distinguished private collections of Jean Stein, Ellen & Jerome Stern, Barbara & Martin Zweig, and Samuel J. & Ethel LeFrak, including outstanding examples by Alberto Giacometti, Kurt Schwitters, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Eva Gonzales and Raoul Dufy. The sale leads with an important example of grattage by Max Ernst, quite possibly the finest in private hands, a playful Picasso oil, an early Chagall, and a rare monumental work by Albert Aublet which has not been seen publically in over 100 years. Other highlights include a Bauhaus watercolor by Wassily Kandinsky, a charming dusk scene by Henri Le Sidaner, a major Surrealist painting by Paul Delvaux with impeccable provenance, and an elegant caryatid drawing by Amedeo Modigliani. The Day Sale also includes a group of fresh to the market works on paper from the Diamonstein-Speilvogel Collection, full proceeds of which will benefit a not-for-profit charitable foundation, including a magnificent gouache by Joan Miró.
