Sotheby’s S|2 is pleased to present Fantastic Rediscovered: Rare Photographs from the Estate of Kati Horna curated by Michel Otayek. A cosmopolitan Jewish woman whose life was upended by war, exile, and loss, Kati Horna (née Katalin Deutsch Blau, Budapest, 1912 - Mexico City, 2000) embraced photography as a tool for subsistence, political engagement, and creative expression. Trained in Budapest under the renowned Hungarian master József Pécsi, she went on to develop a truly idiosyncratic style that reflected her exposure to an array of movements and environments, from New Vision photography in Central Europe and war photojournalism in Spain to the late surrealist scene in Mexico City. Most of Horna’s work was produced for the press—and much of it as photographic essays, series, or stories. Among the defining traits of her photographic practice is a keen sensibility towards the fantastic and mysterious in everyday life.
