Results: Our Contemporary Art Evening Auction totaled $319.2 million with 96% of lots sold, well above the pre-sale high estimate with new auction records for Jean-Michel Basquiat, Jonas Wood, Wolfgang Tillmans, Blinky Palermo and more. The season was led by Basquiat’s masterpiece Untitled, which sold for $110.5 million, shattering previous records for the artist. Other outstanding highlights from the sale include Roy Lichtenstein’s NudeSunbathing at $24 million, Gerhard Richter’s AbstraktesBild at $15.4 million and Robert Rauscehnberg’s Rigger at $12.3 million.
Auction Details: Sotheby's is delighted to announce our upcoming 18 May Contemporary Art Evening Auction, which offers a strong selection of works from the post-war period to the present. The sale season is led by Jean-Michel Basquiat's Untitled, 1982, a monumental masterpiece that has been virtually unseen since it last appeared on the market in 1984. All works will be on view beginning 5 May in our New York headquarters. Also leading the auction is Roy Lichtenstein's Nude Sunbathing, a classic, vibrant-red example of the late artist's work, as well as top quality examples from Agnes Martin, Rudolf Stingel, Robert Rauschenberg, Andy Warhol and Mark Grotjahn.
