On April 26 2017, Pierre Bergé and Associés, in association with Sotheby’s, will have the pleasure of selling a selection of 300 books and manuscripts from the celebrated library of Jean A. Bonna.
This selection, from the 15th to the 20th century, reflects the wide and fine taste of the collector. The collection includes many illustrated books, starting with the French Boccaccio printed by Antoine Vérard (1493) and illustrated with 80 woodcuts, and moving onto modern illustrated works by Bellmer, Derain, Manet, Miro ou Fautrier.
Travel is also represented, and literature, including a collection of 13 works in first edition by Restif de la Bretonne. First editions of many famous authors such as Balzac, Baudelaire, Beckett, Borgesare are for up for auction.
Science is also covered, with the magnificent dedication copy of Galileo’s Discorsi et Dimostrazioni matematiche (Leyden,1638) bound by Le Gascon in a breathtaking contemporary red morocco “a la fanfare” binding for the Comte de Noailles, the dedicatee of this famous work.
