The Arts of the Islamic World sale on 25 October covers the vast historical and geographical breadth of art produced under Islamic patronage, celebrating the diverse artistic traditions which flourished in Spain, North Africa, the Middle East, Persia and India from the 8th to the 19th century. At the forefront of the works on offer are exceptionally rare pieces from the 16th and 17th centuries, including a large and rare Ottoman voided silk velvet and metal thread (çatma) panel with carnations, bearing testament to the splendour of the royal weaving ateliers of Bursa and Istanbul; and a beautiful coat meticulously embroidered with thousands of Basra seed pearls, from the opulent courts of the 19th-century Indian Maharajas, demonstrating the extent of the trade networks throughout the Middle East and India. Finally, we are thrilled to offer a pair of large-scale Safavid oil portraits, of the utmost rarity, from a distinguished Persian private collection.
