The first of Sotheby's Masters Week January 2016 auctions, The Collection of A. Alfred Taubman: Old Masters achieved a strong total of $24.1 million. Valentin de Boulogne's The Crowning of Thorns led the sale at $5.2 million, soaring above its high estimate of $2 million and setting a new record for the artist at auction. Painted in Rome around 1615, the impressive work – measuring nearly 5 feet tall – is among the first known pictures painted by Valentin de Boulogne, Caravaggio’s most accomplished French follower and arguably his greatest acolyte. A masterpiece of Baroque naturalism, The Crowning of Thorns was just one of five paintings that broke artist records that evening. Other highlights of the sale include a prolonged battle between two determined bidders for Raphael's Portrait of Valerio Belli, which fetched $3.3 million, and the sale of Thomas Gainsborough's The Blue Page at $3.3 million.
Details:
Mr. Taubman’s impressive collection of Old Masters ranges from rare pieces by Renaissance artists Raphael and Dürer – two of the most iconic names in the history of art – to a stunning view of Venice by Bernardo Bellotto. He also put together one of the strongest groups of Italian Baroque material in private hands, as well as a number of classic 18th century British pictures, such as the freely painted Blue Page by Thomas Gainsborough.
