Overview
Discovered by Lucara Diamond Corp. at their Karowe mine in Botswana in November 2015, the 1,109 carat Lesedi La Rona, meaning “Our Light” in Botswana’s Tswana language, is the largest gem-quality rough diamond to have been discovered in over a century, and the largest gem-quality diamond in existence today. First formed between 2.5 to 3 billion years ago, the diamond is roughly the size of a tennis ball and is of exceptional transparency and quality according to the Gemmological Institute of America. Sotheby’s has been given the honour of offering Lesedi La Rona at auction in a standalone sale in London on 29 June.
Lots 1A, 1B and 1C will be offered as part of the sale of Lesedi la Rona and will be offered as the first three lots of that sale at 6.30pm, immediately followed by the sale of Lesedi la Rona at 7pm.
