Featuring Buffet’s oils and works on paper depicting his iconic clowns, still lifes, animals and leisure scenes, the exhibition coincides with the opening of several international museum exhibitions as well as the release of a new biography on the artist.
Perhaps one of the twentieth century’s most controversial artists, Buffet has been called an overnight millionaire, popstar, iconoclast and recluse, his artwork dubbed challenging, kitsch, taboo and transformative. His legacy has been embraced, ridiculed and celebrated once again. Yet whether Buffet’s art is considered divine or blasphemous, it is impossible to ignore.
A recent widespread resurgence of interest in Buffet’s work among private collectors led to the establishment of a new auction record for the artist this summer and subsequently, the emergence of fresh-to-market works from private collections around the world.
