The World of Mortals · Dreamland brings together 56 paintings in two distinct series recently completed by renowned Shanghainese artist Chen Yiming. Instantly recognizable, the paintings from The World of Mortals series are reminiscent of Chen Yiming’s earlier portraiture work for which he is perhaps most well-known. Incorporating classical Chinese elements with a romanticism reminiscent of old Shanghai, the artist brings us glimpses of urban, interior scenes and invokes a story which the viewer is invited to imagine. Often referred to as a ‘visual poet’, his paintings are elegant, serene and masterfully executed.
In contrast, in his Dreamland series, Chen Yiming departs from his trademark realism into the world of abstraction. Executed with mixed media on paper, he re-interprets nostalgic landscape scenes of China with a freer brushstroke and soft, somber color palette. While the series presents an evolution of Chen Yiming’s style, the works still display his poetic artistry but with a deeper warmth and emotion not previously seen.
Born in Shanghai in 1951, Chen Yiming has enjoyed a prolific and successful career as an artist. He studied at Shanghai Fine Art School and Shanghai Drama College. He has lived in the United States for many years and has enjoyed numerous solo exhibitions throughout the United States and China.
