Over two days on 8 & 9 May 2015 Sotheby’s sale of The Don Stott Cellar: 50 Years of Collecting brought the outstanding total of $8,412,626, 22% over the high estimate of $6.2 million. The 1,944 lot sale was 96% sold and took place in front of a full salesroom. The total is the second highest for a single-owner wine auction at Sotheby’s New York and the fourth highest at Sotheby’s worldwide. Don Stott, a New York financier and philanthropist, put together an extraordinary collection with a particular emphasis on Burgundy and the top lots were dominated by a variety of older vintages from some of the region’s most famous producers. The highest price of the sale was for a case of Montrachet 1973 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti which sold for $58,188 to an Asian Private Collector (est. $25/35,000) and there was a series of outstanding results for Domaine Armand Rousseau, Domaine Georges Roumier, and Henri Jayer among others.

Over a lifetime of collecting, Don Stott put together an extraordinary collection with a particular emphasis on Burgundy. Starting as a young man, this remarkable connoisseur has made countless visits to the region purchasing and building up an exceptional knowledge of the very finest wines available. The result is one of the most distinguished and illustrious collections of Burgundy in the United States. The rarest wines from the greatest producers on the Côte d’Or include 1961, 64, 66, 71, 78 and 1985 Chambertin from Domaine Armand Rousseau, 1947, 49, 59 and 1971 Musigny from Comte Georges de Vogüé and from Domaine Georges Roumier 22 vintages of Musigny including 1966, 71, 78, 85 and 1990 and 25 vintages of Bonnes Mares including 1971, 1978, 1988 and 1990.
