The results of Sotheby’s sale of American Paintings, Drawings and Sculpture on October 2nd reflected a confident and solid market with over 57% of the sold lots achieving prices within or above their estimates. Our top lot, Perugia, by George Inness, sold for a hammer price of $120,000, shattering its pre-sale estimate of $30,000-50,000.
Our first fall sale of American art features more than two hundred paintings, drawings and sculptures by many of America’s finest artists including works from several noteworthy private collections and an institution. From the group of property sold to benefit the Sam Simon Charitable Giving Foundation, we are pleased to be offering several excellent examples of pin-up art by the well-known artists of the genre, Gillete Elvgren, Alberto Vargas and LeRoy Neiman. Alfred Thompson Bricher’s landscape, “Lake George” is a particularly impressive painting from the 19th century, while Willard L. Metcalf’s idyllic “Mountain Pastures – Vermont” is an outstanding work of American Impressionism. On offer are several lovely paintings by Grandma Moses, one of them our cover lot. We look forward to welcoming you to our galleries on September 26th.
