Our 1 April auction A Modern Library: The Gordon Waldorf Collection did very well, realizing a total of 1,809,625 USD and setting several record prices for modern literature in jacket. The sale was led by a first edition of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby, which sold above its high estimate for 377,000 USD. Other successes which sold above estimate included a remarkable edition of J.R.R. Tolkien's The Hobbit, achieving 100,000 USD, Fitzgerald's This Side of Paradise, achieving 161,000 USD, and a spectacular edition of Ernest Hemingway's The Sun Also Rises, with its original dust jacket with iconic design by Cleonike Damianakes.
Gordon Waldorf collected with keen vision, forming a select library of the best obtainable modern literary high spots. For sale on 1 April 2014, The Gordon Waldorf Collection will feature books distinguished by exceptional condition and evocative association. The collection includes truly fine (and thus truly rare) copies of such titles as The Sun also Rises and The Hobbit, as well as the best example of The Great Gatsby in jacket to come to market in decades. The sale also boasts remarkable presentation copies, including Faulkner to his mother, Hemingway to his wife Martha, Eliot to his literary patron, F. Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald both inscribing to a fellow author, and Kerouac at last identifying himself as the narrator of On the Road.
