Sotheby’s traditional auction of Swiss Art in Zurich achieved a total CHF 4,794,500. Among the stand-out lots was an extraordinary group of rare works illustrating the diversity and the talent of Félix Vallotton, along with remarkable pieces by major artists including Robert Zünd, Albert Anker and Cuno Amiet. Rare works by Vallotton included a moving sculpture depicting a mother and child, a beautiful still-life painting and a series of engravings reflecting the artist’s inimitable style.
Two extraordinary works by Albert Anker also drew attention: a superb oil portrait of a young girl, Mädchenbildnis, and an exquisite drawing, Geschwisterliebe. Together the works brought a total of CHF 447,000. A stunning landscape by Robert Zünd sold for CHF 250,000. Illustrating the importance of symbolism for Swiss painting, Das Paradies by Cuno Amiet – a preparatory study for the mural painting which adorns the building housing the Federal Court in Lausanne – more than doubled its high estimate, achieving CHF 778,000.
