Sotheby’s is honoured to present a selection of 50 drawings by Pablo Picasso from the personal collection of the artist’s granddaughter, Marina Picasso. This beautiful ensemble, embellished with several ceramics, will be exhibited during the Salon International du Dessin de Paris, showcasing the theme of the Nude in Picasso’s work.
From the many sketches of prostitutes during his Barcelona period, executed in Indian ink and fused with eroticism, right up until his remarkable series of The Painter and his Model, the Nude is a constant theme spanning every era and every medium explored by the Spanish Master. It is a pretext for depicting the bodies of his muses, whether it is Marie-Thérèse and her voluptuous arabesque curves, or Françoise Gilot exalted as the femme-fleur. It was also through his focus on the Nude in 1906-07 that Picasso entered into a period of greater visual experimentation, which would eventually lead him to Cubism, as shown in the numerous preparatory studies for the celebrated Demoiselles d’Avignon, of which carefully selected examples will be displayed during this exhibition.
