The Contemporary Art Day Auction totalled £12,519,475, led by Francis Bacon’s Figures in a Landscape (circa 1954) which nearly quadrupled its low estimate to sell for £938,500. The 31 works donated to benefit the non-for profit Parasol Unit more than doubled a low estimate of £974,500, realising a total of £2,092,250.
Sotheby’s is delighted to be offering works by artists at the very forefront of Contemporary art on 18 October. From the Post-War era through to prominent exponents of today’s young emerging art scene, this auction will illustrate the rich depth and quality of today’s market. Featuring a striking example of Andy Warhol’s Guns, and a brilliantly composed photograph by Andreas Gursky, Jumeirah Palm, the sale will also present wonderful examples by established artists such as Gerhard Richter, Tony Cragg, Rudolf Stingel and many more. We are also honoured to be offering works donated on behalf of Parasol unit's 10th Anniversary, which include a beautifully rendered portrait by Michaël Borremans and an emotive and intriguing triptych by Luc Tuymans. This is in addition to a selection of important works by pioneering artists, such as Nick Darmstaedter and Tony Lewis.
