Collectors turned out in force to acquire important works from Sotheby’s recent British & Irish Art sale.
The auction’s top lot, Tired Out by Philip Wilson Steer, exceeded pre-sale estimates by setting an auction record for the artist. Not seen in public since 1885, the work sold for £674,500.
Following the record-breaking sales of Rossetti’s A Christmas Carol andProserpine last year, the most significant Pre-Raphaelite oil painting has come to light and will be offered at auction this spring for the first time in more than half a century. Pandora is a life-sized allegorical portrait of the artist’s beautiful muse Jane Morris, clad in fiery red robes and opening the fated box of torments. It will be the highlight of a sale that includes choice examples by British and Irish artists of the 19th and 20th centuries.
