Sotheby's Modern and Contemporary Chinese Art sale in Beijing on 1 June 2014 achieved a strong result of RMB115 million / US$18.6 million. The sale was led by Zao Wou-Ki’s Sous Bois Dans La Nuitin, which soared over the high estimate to bring RMB36 million / US$5.8 million. Strong prices were also achieved for iconic Modern works by Chu Teh-Chun and Wang Yidong, as well as for the Contemporary Chinese artists Liu Xiaodong, Zhao Bandi, Zhou Chunya and Mao Yan.
Classic works by renowned artists will lead this season's Modern and Contemporary Chinese Arts Sale, including Zao Wou-Ki's magnum opus Sous Bois Dans La Nuit, from the oracle bone period and 31.10.79 from late 70s, and Chu Teh-Chun's masterpiece. In addition to these highlights, the sale will feature magnificent pieces by highly sought-after contemporary Chinese artists Liu Xiaodong, Wang Yidong, Zhao Bandi, Zhou Chunya, Mao Yan and Li Guijun. Contemporary ink paintings will also be included, by such talented artists as Liu Dan, Xu Lei, Li Jin and Tian Liming.
