On October 31 and November 1 Sotheby’s Print Department will present a wide range of works including the Mary Cassatt etching The Banjo Lesson and a rare example of The Oval Mirror, of which there are only two impressions. Modern Prints are highlighted by Pablo Picasso’s épreuve rincée, Femmes au Miroir, an ethereal composition showing one woman consulting her image in the reflection of a mirror and in another woman’s gaze. The Contemporary portion of the auction will offer Property from a Private European Collection, which comprises iconic examples of Pop Art as well as a significant monotype by Sam Francis. Our Andy Warhol selection will be led by two portfolios of six unique $, exemplifying the artist’s affinity for both vibrant colors and blatant commercialism.
The 31 October and 1 November Print sale totaled $8,261,504. Highlights of the sale included several contemporary and modern prints by Jasper Johns, Lichtenstein, Picasso and Chagall. The top lot of the entire sale was a contemporary print by Andy Warhol, a set of six $, which realised $353,000.
