This year marks the centenary of Maqbool Fida Husain’s birth. In honour of his illustrious career and contribution to the founding of modern art in India, the artist and a strong selection of his works are featured in our upcoming sale. Most notably, the published masterpiece Jhoola (lot 6) is depicted on the front cover of the catalogue. On offer are an array of works by the leading modern masters and contemporary artists from India and Pakistan. Highlights from the modern section include a stunning work by Vasudeo S. Gaitonde, titled Painting No.1 (lot 34), and an Untitled canvas by Sayed Haider Raza, painted just before his venture into Bindu series (lot 40).
In addition, there is an outstanding work by Francis Newton Souza titled Christ on Palm Sunday (lot 18), a moving and emotional Pieta by Krishen Khanna from 1978 (lot 24), a luminous 1977 Untitled (Landscape)by Jehangir Sabavala (lot 25) and a bright, candy coloured 1972 canvas from Bhupen Khakhar titled Air, Steam and Speed (lot 28).
The contemporary section brings together a gorgeous lightbox installation piece by Jitish Kallat titledConditions Apply (lot 61), and an exceptional diptych by Thukral and Tagra (lot 83). Indian Sculpture in the modern era is honoured through the iconic works of Chintamoni Kar (lot 16), Prodosh Das Gupta (lots 14, 17) and Sarbari Roy Choudhury (lot 13). These artists explored the ideals of ‘Modernism’ in their works by experimenting with unconventional material and using the rural landscape and the tribal regions as inspiration.
Burgeoning art from Pakistan is represented by prints and paintings from Anwar Jalal Shemza (lots 65, 67, 68, and 69), an intricate neo-miniature on paper by Mohammad Imran Qureshi, whose rooftop commission is now on display at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (lot 70), black and white photographic prints by Seher Shah (lot 71), a conceptual political work titled Line of Control by Farida Batool (lot 72), a large stunning watercolour by Naiza Khan (lot 73) and beautifully detailed works of veils on paper by Aisha Khalid (lot 74, 76). The auction is varied in breadth and depth which truly has something for everyone.
