Records were established at the sale: for a jewel by Van Cleef & Arpels set by the "Walska Briolette Diamond" brooch, which sold for CHF 9,685,000 ($10,555,778); a record for a pair of colourless diamonds at 8,453,000 CHF ($9,213,010), and an auction record for a sapphire jewel at 7,669,000 CHF ($8,358,520).
This November Sotheby’s Geneva is honoured to offer one of the world’s great natural treasures, the largest known fancy vivid pink diamond in world – The Pink Star. Weighing 59.60 carats, this oval-cut diamond is the largest flawless or internally flawless, fancy vivid pink diamond that the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) has ever graded. Extraordinarily, the diamond is also Type IIa, rare for a pink diamond of this size and colour. Meticulously cut over a period of two years, the Pink Star is still more than twice the size of the magnificent Graff Pink – the 24.78 carat fancy intense pink diamond which established a world auction record for a diamond and any gemstone or jewel at $46.2 million, at Sotheby’s Geneva in 2010.
The Magnificent Jewels sale will also offer The “Walska Briolette Diamond” Brooch, created by Van Cleef & Arpels in 1971. A masterpiece of design, this iconic jewel showcases the historic “Walska Briolette Diamond”, a fancy vivid yellow diamond weighing 96.62 carats. Once in the collection of opera singer and jewellery connoisseur Ganna Walska, the briolette was subsequently mounted as a brooch and most recently exhibited at Van Cleef and Arpels retrospectives both at the Cooper Hewitt, National Design Museum in New York, in 2012, and at the Palais Royal, Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, in 2012-13.
Several important collections will also be featured, including jewels from the Collection of Odile de Richelieu, Countess Gabriel de La Rochefoucauld, Princess de La Rochefoucauld, daughter of the 7th Duke of Richelieu, to be sold in aid of a charitable foundation. The collection includes The Richelieu Sapphires, a pair of rare and magnificent Kashmir sapphires weighing a total of 47.00 carats, mounted with diamonds as earrings; an important natural pearl sautoir of extraordinary length measuring nearly three and a half metres; and a diamond rivière/tiara, from the early 20th century.
The sale will also include an impressive array of important white and fancy coloured diamonds including an impressive 5.04 carat rectangular mixed-cut fancy vivid blue diamond ring; a 5.51 carat pear-shaped fancy intense blue diamond ring; a 2.05 carat cushion-shaped modified brilliant fancy vivid green diamond, mounted as a ring with diamonds of pink tint; a 20.80 carats marquise-shaped fancy vivid yellow diamond ring of exceptional hue; a pair of diamond earrings each set with a D Colour, Internally Flawless, Type IIa brilliant-cut diamond weighing 23.77 and 23.78 carats respectively; and a 15.69 carat D Colour, VVS1 Clarity, potentially flawless marquise-shaped diamond ring by Cartier. Impressive gemstones include an untreated Burmese sapphire weighing 114.74 carats, several important Burmese rubies, wonderful Colombian emeralds, and a superb selection of saltwater natural pearls.
Select highlights from the Magnificent Jewels auction will be on public exhibition at Sotheby’s locations in Hong Kong, Zurich, London, and New York. This is an extraordinary sale and we look forward to presenting all of the jewels at the pubic exhibition opening in Geneva on 9 November.
