With more than 300 exquisite paintings by modern Chinese artists, this sale features salient works from various stages in the careers of such masters as Zhang Daqian, Qi Baishi, Huang Binhong, Wu Changshuo and Lin Fengmian. Among a number of works fresh to the market from prestigious collections is the notable highlight Drunken Dance by Zhang Daqian from the early 1950s. Also of great interest is a magnificent ensemble of late Qing and early Republican period calligraphy and fan paintings, from the collections of legendary Shanghai collector Qian Jingtang and noted Hong Kong collector Liang Jingyu.
The sale of Fine Chinese Paintings achieved a total of HK$361 million / US$46.3 million, more than doubling the pre-sale estimate (HK$130 million / US$16.6 million*).
The sale was 97% sold by lot. Five lots sold above HK$ 10 million / US$ 1.3 million.
The top lot is Zhang Daqian's The Drunken Dance fetches HK$ 23 million / US$ 3 million (Est: HK$ 7 - 9 million / US$ 9,000 - 1.2 million*).
