Not since the Library of the Château de La Roche-Guyon was auctioned at Sotheby’s in 1987 has such an important library appeared on the market. Initiated under Marie de Rohan Montbazon (1600-79), who was immortalized by Alexandre Dumas in his Mousquetaires trilogy, the Library of the Ducs de Luynes from the Château de Dampierre charts this illustrious family’s history.
The majestic scope of the books ranges from history, genealogy and literature to travel, philosophy, religion and music. The sale of the Library will be in two parts. The first, devoted to the period from Louis XIII to the Revolution, will be held at the Galerie Charpentier on 29 - 30 April 2013. The second part will take place in autumn 2013.
One of the most fascinating items in the April sale is a unique album recording the 1745 celebrations in Paris to mark the wedding of Louis XV’s son, the Dauphin to the Infanta of Spain. It is adorned with 19 original watercolours and presented in a boxed ensemble clad in morocco and features the Luynes’ ceremonial coat of arms (€200,000 - 300,000).
