Our first American sale of the season includes many works from the outstanding collection of the late publishing magnate, David C. Copley. Among them, our cover lot, Little Irish Girl by Robert Henri, was painted on the artist’s first trip to Ireland in 1913. Also featured are Thomas Moran’s eloquent depiction of nature in turmoil, The Receding Wave, and William Zorach’s masterful cubist work, Springtime in the High Sierras.
19th century highlights include a rare watercolor by John James Audubon, Maryland Yellowthroats, and two paintings, long-lost and available for the first time in many decades: Elihu Vedder’s Young Marsyas(Marsyas Enchanting the Hares) and Jasper Cropsey’s Autumn Afternoon. Three Saturday Evening Post covers by the American illustrator, Joseph Christian Leyendecker, include an exceptionally colorful image of George Washington astride his steed. Among the offerings by 20th century masters are works by Thomas Hart Benton, Milton Avery, Walt Kuhn and Andrew Wyeth.
We are pleased to offer a group of paintings by the relatively unknown but talented artist, Elise (Elise Cavanna Seeds Armitage Welton), from the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, as well as small collections of works from the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden and the High Museum of Art.
