The sale of 20th Century Chinese Art on 6 October 2013 achieved HK$ 133,836,250 / US$ 17,000,000. The top lot, Wu Guanzhong’s Lotus Flowers, sold for HK$ 22,520,000 / US$ 2,887,179, far exceeding the pre-sale estimate of HK$ 6–8 million / US$ 780,000–1.02 million was acquired by an European collector. Besides, six out of the top ten prices were achieved for Zao Wou-Ki’s works which strongly proved Sotheby’s dominance in the market.
This sale gathers museum-quality masterpieces by various 20th century Chinese artists from important private collectors around the world. To commemorate Sotheby’s 40th anniversary in Asia, it is replete with a rich array of exquisite and important works by Modern masters, such as Sanyu, Pan Yuliang, Yun Gee, Zao Wou-Ki, Chu Teh-Chun, Wu Guanzhong, as well as by realist masters Chen Yifei, Wang Yidong and Luo Zhongli. It also provides a rare chance for collectors to acquire exceptional paintings by Zao Wou-Ki and offers works by the artist dating from the 1960s to the 1990s, which fully exemplify each turning point of his artistic achievements.
