Overview

OVERVIEW

Sotheby’s annual sale of Israeli & International Art in New York on 19 December 2012 features a wide ranging selection of classic and contemporary Israeli art spanning almost a century.

The auction is led by a group of works by celebrated artist Reuven Rubin, including the magnificent Jerusalem Seen from Mt. Scopus from circa 1927 (est. $300,000-500,000) and a rare Self Portrait painted while the artist was still in Romania in 1920. The sale also features a powerful composition by Chaïm Soutine painted circa 1921-22 depicting a young man whose World War I wounds are both physical and emotional.

Coming directly from the family of the artist is a rare group of drawings by Bruno Schulz.  Modest  in scale but powerful in content, the drawings evoke the imaginative world of the artist and writer who today is known as the Polish Kafka. The sale includes excellent examples by artists of the modern and contemporary era, including Mordecai Ardon, Ori Reisman, Michael Gross, Raffie Lavie, Moshe Kupferman, Yaacov Agam and Michal Rovner.

The auction will be exhibited in our York Avenue galleries beginning on 14 December, alongside the sale of Important Judaica.
