Highlights from this season’s Impressionist and Modern Art Day Sale include Kees van Dongen’s wonderfully alluring depiction of fashionable Deauville, a celebration of the bright Mediterranean light that inspired so many modern artists. It is so glamorous and joyful an image that it was chosen to feature in a 1950s poster to promote France as a chic tourist destination. This is complemented by Herbin’sPaysage en Corse, of 1907, whose vibrant colour and energetic execution make it an extraordinary example of Fauvism.
Further Modern highlights include a delightful Odilon Redon Vase de Fleurs, bold Miró works on paper, and a lovely Picasso still life from 1920, titled Guitare et Compotier. Surrealism is also well represented, with Delvaux’s atmospheric Le Collier, a fabulous set design by Dali, and exceptional oil paintings by de Chirico and Hans Bellmer.
The Impressionist and Post-Impressionist section includes enchanting landscapes by Renoir and Martin, and a lively depiction of Modern life in a Bonnard street scene. The strong German and Austrian section features some wonderfully inventive works on paper by Klee, and expressive still life paintings by both Pechstein and Kokoschka.
We are also honoured to be offering five works from a private Austrian collection: an outstanding group of works on paper by Klimt and Schiele, testament to the extraordinary influence the artists had on each other.
