The Contemporary Art Day Auction, held in London on 13 October, presents an exciting and vibrant offering of works by both new and established artists, featuring a wide variety of post-war and contemporary paintings, drawings, sculptures and photographs. Coinciding with the high profile and internationally respected Frieze Art Fair, Sotheby’s day sale compliments the fair’s focus on innovative contemporary art, while maintaining its commitment to the sale of the most iconic and sought after works available on the market today.
The sale opens with cutting edge pieces by the leading names in contemporary art, including works by Christopher Wool, Christian Marclay, Sergej Jensen, Ahmed Alsoudani, Thomas Houseago and Ai Weiwei. Further highlights include Richter’s striking Abstraktes Bild, an arresting, richly textural collaged painting by Anselm Kiefer, a cartoon-inspired painting by Yoshitomo Nara and Banksy’s provocative graffiti work on steel. We are thrilled to offer six works by Andy Warhol from an important private collection, including the stunning Shoes with diamond dust and a portrait of the artist Arman. From the post war period are elegant reliefs by the classical masters Jan Schoonhoven and Sergio Camargo, a pink ‘oli’ by Lucio Fontana, and three exquisite works by Eduardo Chillida which exemplify his diverse approach to materials.
The afternoon session opens with forty works for sale to benefit Cologne’s Museum Ludwig which have been generously donated by their artists and galleries. The Museum Ludwig houses a world class collection of Modern and Contemporary art, and the sale of pieces by artists including Gerhard Richter, Peter Doig, On Kawara, Thomas Schütte, Wade Guyton, Cindy Sherman, Ed Ruscha and Rosemarie Trockel, among others, will raise essential funds for the continuation of the Museum’s pioneering exhibition programme and acquisitions fund. The Museum will also be holding a separate sale of an additional thirty artworks on the 29th September in Cologne.
We look forward to welcoming you to our galleries from Sunday 7 October.
