Sotheby's 10 June sale of Old Master and 19th Century European Art offers a fine selection of paintings and drawings covering a wide range of collecting interests. The Old Master section begins with a series of figures in landscapes, notably the charming Deucalion and Pyrrha by Daniel Vertangen and The Penitent Saint Jerome by Pieter van Bloemen. There is an assortment of elegant genre scenes including those by Jacques Antoine Vallin and Joost van Geel. The sale offers a fine selection of religious works, beginning with a pair of 15th Century gilt panels by Vittore Crivelli. Also on offer is Andrea Meldolla'sMadonna and Child and an Annunciation by an artist of the South Netherlandish School. A series of attractive portraits by English, French and Dutch painters range from a Follower of Frans Hals to Francois Hubert Drouais and George Romney. The section concludes with an attractive pair of allegories by a Follower of Jan Brueghel the Younger and Hendrick van Balen, a mythological scene by a Follower of Pietro da Cortona and a portrait After Bartholomaeus Spranger.
The 19th Century European section starts with a beautiful view of Venice by Felix Ziem and a vibrant bouquet of flowers by Louise Garlieb. They are followed by a few choice Orientalist compositions by Narcisse Berchère, Giulio Rosati and Frederick Arthur Bridgman, and two poetic works by Pierre Coomans and Henri Fantin-Latour. The cover lot for the sale, Gustave Léonard de Jonghe's Mother With Her Young Daughter, showcases the artist's great finesse in handling a variety of textures and reflections in an intimate motif. As in the previous sale, there is a good selection of oils by Edouard-Léon Cortès, most notably an important and large early composition Le Treport, Effet Du Soir which has been in a private collection for at least three generations. Other highlights include Two Lions in a Cave by Wilhelm Kuhnert, Dawn by Luis Ricardo Falero and a handsome group of Sporting pictures lead by John Emms and Heywood Hardy.
