The sale of Impressionist and Modern Art in Paris on June 1st will present a host of remarkable modern paintings, sculptures and drawings, notably a superb 1942 composition by Joan Miró, Femmes et oiseau devant le soleil. Acquired by the illustrious dealer Pierre Matisse, this monumental work impressively combines the techniques of pastel, ink and gouache on flocked "velour" paper. The sale also showcases an ensemble of exceptional Surrealist works, chiefly La Terre de Feu by René Magritte from 1947, as well as iconic paintings by André Masson, Toyen, Victor Brauner and Max Ernst. Picasso, Giacometti and Chagall are also represented with a series of magnificent works. Other highlights include a selection of refined pictures from distinguished private European collections, notably the exquisite Au jardin en Bretagne by Pierre-Auguste Renoir, a dazzling pastel by Odilon Redon and the enchanting Jeune fille marchant à travers les champs immortalised by Henri Martin. Finally, Cubism will take centre stage with two splendid still lives by Juan Gris and Georges Braque, a masterpiece by Henri Hayden and several striking compositions by Auguste Herbin, Louis Marcoussis and Marcelle Cahn.
